Hypnotherapy for Prescription Drug Dependency

Hypnotherapy Support for Prescription Medication Reduction in Canberra

If you and your doctor have decided to reduce a medication, the hardest part is often not the taper itself but the fear around it. Hypnotherapy works on that — always alongside your prescriber, never instead of them.

Never reduce or stop a prescribed medication on your own. Stopping benzodiazepines abruptly can cause seizures and can be fatal. Coming off opioids drops your tolerance quickly, which makes returning to a former dose dangerous. Any change to a dose is a decision for the doctor who prescribed it, at a pace they set.

This is a non-clinical service. We don’t diagnose, we don’t prescribe, we don’t advise on doses, and we will never suggest you change a medication. What we work on is the anxiety and the conditioning around it, while your medical team manages the clinical side.

For advice at any hour, healthdirect puts you through to a registered nurse on 1800 022 222, and the National Alcohol and Other Drug Hotline is free and confidential on 1800 250 015. In a crisis, Lifeline is 13 11 14, or call 000.

Understanding Prescription Medication Dependence

Dependence can develop even when a medication has been taken exactly as prescribed, and it is not a sign that anyone has done anything wrong. With some medications — benzodiazepines, opioid pain relief and certain sleeping tablets in particular — the body adapts over time, and reducing or stopping starts to feel impossible long before it actually is.

Alongside the physical side, which is your doctor’s territory, there is a psychological one: the anxiety about what will happen without the medication, the association between the tablet and feeling safe or able to cope, and the fear that builds before each step down. That psychological layer is often what stalls a taper that was going fine on paper, and it is the part hypnotherapy works on. Here is how hypnotherapy works if it is new to you.

A note on antidepressants. Antidepressants are not addictive in the way the medications above can be. Stopping them can cause discontinuation effects and can allow a depression to return, which is why coming off them is a careful, doctor-led process and not something to attempt on your own or on the strength of a therapy session. If you are on one and want to come off, that conversation starts with your prescriber.

How This Affects People

These are the psychological parts — the ones that sit outside what a prescription can fix.

Fear of the Next Step Down

Anticipating withdrawal is often harder than the reduction itself, and the dread can arrive days before the change does. Easing that is where hypnotherapy earns its place.

Learned Association

The mind links the tablet with safety, sleep or being able to cope. Those links are learned, which means they can be worked with — while your doctor handles the dose.

Nothing Else in Place

Where a medication has been doing the work of managing stress or sleep, reducing it leaves a gap. Building other ways to settle yourself first makes the whole process steadier.

Sleep Anxiety

With sleeping tablets, the fear of a night without one often does more damage than the reduction. Rebuilding confidence in your own sleep is work hypnotherapy is well suited to.

Difficult Conversations

Raising this with a GP or specialist can feel exposing, particularly if you are worried about being judged. Going in calmer and clearer makes those appointments go better.

Shame and Self-Blame

Dependence after following medical advice exactly is not a moral failing, but it is very often experienced as one. That shame keeps people silent, and silence keeps them stuck.

Where Hypnotherapy Fits

Hypnotherapy for medication reduction is used alongside medical supervision, never instead of it. Your doctor decides what changes and when. Our role is the psychological side — the anxiety, the conditioning, the fear, and the beliefs that make a taper feel unsurvivable. Those are frequently the reason a medically sound reduction plan stalls, and they are precisely where this work is useful.

Spiro Apostolopoulos and Stella Jones are Clinical Hypnotherapists, Strategic Psychotherapists and NLP Master Practitioners, and have worked with Canberrans since 2012. They are comfortable working as one part of a team that includes your GP or specialist, and every session is tailored to where you actually are rather than run from a template. What to Expect in a Session

Your first session starts with a private conversation about your history, your medication, what your doctor has planned and what you are most worried about. From there your therapist guides you into a deeply relaxed but alert state, where the subconscious is far more open to change. We work on the fear, build other ways to settle your nervous system, and strengthen your confidence in getting through each step.

Each session builds on the last. You leave with practical tools and a recorded audio to use in between, which many clients find most valuable on the days around a reduction. Secure online sessions are available anywhere in Australia. See what to expect from your first visit →

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hypnotherapy safe while I’m taking prescription medication?

Yes. Hypnotherapy is non-invasive and does not interact with medications. Keep taking everything exactly as prescribed, and make any changes only with the doctor who prescribed them. Hypnotherapy supports that process; it is not a reason to alter anything.

Can hypnotherapy help me come off my medication faster?

No, and we would not try. The pace belongs to your medical team, and going faster than they advise is how people get hurt. What hypnotherapy can do is reduce the anxiety and the psychological barriers that commonly stall a taper — which often means a plan your doctor has already set actually gets finished.

My doctor hasn’t suggested reducing. Should I be asking?

That is a conversation to have with them, not with us. Plenty of people stay on a medication long-term for very good reasons, and there is nothing wrong with that. If you want to raise it, your GP is the person to raise it with — and if the asking is the daunting part, that is something we can help you feel steadier about.

Which medications is this relevant to?

Most commonly benzodiazepines, opioid pain relief and sleeping tablets, where physical dependence can build with ordinary prescribed use. The psychological patterns are broadly similar across them.

Antidepressants sit differently. They are not addictive in the same way, but stopping them can cause discontinuation effects and can let a depression come back, so any change is a careful, doctor-led process. We will support you through a reduction your prescriber is managing; we will not encourage you to start one.

Will you tell me to get off my medication?

Never. We don’t prescribe, we don’t advise on doses, and we hold no view that being medicated is worse than not being medicated. For many people medication is the right thing long-term, and we are not in the business of talking anyone out of it. We work on what you and your doctor have decided together.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on how long this has been going on and how your taper is structured. Many clients find four to eight sessions useful, often running alongside a medically supervised reduction, with sessions timed around the harder steps. You will get an honest view at your free consult.

Does this replace my GP, specialist or pharmacist?

No. This is a non-clinical service and it is one part of a bigger picture. Your prescriber manages the medication, your pharmacist is an excellent and under-used source of advice, and we work on the psychological side alongside both.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes. Secure online sessions are available anywhere in Australia and carry the same quality as in-person appointments — which can matter a great deal on a day when leaving the house feels like too much.
