Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about hypnotherapy, how our sessions work, and what to expect from Canberra Hypnotherapy Clinic.

About Hypnotherapy

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that uses hypnosis to induce a state of deep relaxation, heightened suggestibility, and focused attention. It works by accessing the subconscious mind — where habits, beliefs, and emotional patterns are stored — to facilitate positive, lasting changes in thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.

What does hypnosis actually feel like?

Most people describe the hypnotic state as deeply relaxing — similar to that pleasant state between waking and sleep, or the absorption you feel while watching a film or driving a familiar road. You remain aware throughout; it is simply a focused, receptive state of mind.

Is hypnosis safe? Will I lose control?

Hypnosis works with your unconscious mind, which is naturally protective of your interests. Contrary to popular myths, you are always in control and able to exit the trance state instantly. During a session you cannot be made to do or think anything that conflicts with your own will or values.

Can everyone be hypnotised?

Most people can experience a hypnotic state to some degree. Those who tend to get absorbed in books, films, or daydreaming often respond particularly well. The depth of trance needed for effective therapeutic work is very accessible — a light, comfortable state is all that is required.

What can’t be treated with hypnotherapy?

Serious psychiatric conditions such as psychosis, active suicidal ideation, or severe dissociative disorders require specialised psychiatric care and are referred accordingly. Drug addiction and clinical depression require medical and psychiatric treatment — hypnotherapy can be a powerful complementary support but does not replace that care.

Is hypnotherapy the same as stage hypnosis?

No. Clinical hypnotherapy is a structured, evidence-informed therapeutic process conducted in a private, professional setting. Stage hypnosis selects highly responsive performers for entertainment purposes. The two have little in common beyond the use of the word “hypnosis”.

Our Sessions

What happens in the first session?

Your first session begins with a comprehensive interview — exploring your specific concerns, history, goals, and what you want to change. This informs a personalised treatment plan scoped to your needs. The session then moves into NLP techniques and a tailored hypnotherapy experience, followed by a recorded hypnotherapy audio you can use between appointments.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on the concern and individual responsiveness. Many clients notice significant change within three to five sessions. Some issues — particularly simple phobias or smoking cessation — can shift in one to two sessions. Your therapist will outline a realistic expectation at your first appointment.

What if I am unable to go into a deep trance?

A light state of trance is all that is needed — similar to the relaxed absorption you experience while watching a film or driving a familiar route. With each session, you will find yourself becoming more at ease. The trance state is pleasant and becomes increasingly natural over time.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes. While our clinic is based in Canberra with a Sydney office, we offer secure online hypnotherapy sessions via video conferencing for clients across Australia. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person appointments. Many clients find that the comfort of their own environment actually enhances relaxation.

What should I do between sessions?

Each session includes a recorded hypnotherapy audio tailored to your specific concern. Listening to this daily — particularly before sleep — reinforces the changes made in session and accelerates progress. Your therapist will also suggest practical exercises relevant to your goals.

What if I am on medication?

Hypnotherapy is safe and works effectively in parallel with other therapies and medications. It is always advised that clients remain on their medication and under the supervision of their doctor. Hypnotherapy complements, it does not replace, medical care.

Conditions & Results

What conditions does hypnotherapy help with?

Hypnotherapy helps all anxiety-based conditions including addictions (alcohol, smoking, drugs, food, gambling, gaming, internet), phobias, insomnia, depression, chronic pain, and performance concerns. It is useful in resolving everyday worries, traumas, and emotional problems. The deep relaxation of the hypnotic state allows problems to be addressed at their cause.

How quickly will I see results?

Many clients notice a meaningful shift after their very first session. The full benefit accumulates across a personalised programme of sessions. Because hypnotherapy works at the subconscious level — where patterns are actually stored — it often produces change more rapidly than approaches that rely solely on conscious reasoning.

Is hypnotherapy effective for anxiety?

Yes. Hypnotherapy is highly effective for anxiety and related conditions because it directly addresses the subconscious patterns driving anxious responses — rather than simply managing symptoms consciously. Combined with strategic psychotherapy and NLP, the results are typically faster and more durable than traditional talk therapy.

Can hypnotherapy help me quit smoking?

Yes — and it is one of the most evidence-supported applications of hypnotherapy. Many clients stop smoking after one to three sessions, as the emotional and habitual associations that sustain the behaviour are addressed directly at the subconscious level.

Can hypnotherapy help with weight management?

Yes. Hypnotherapy addresses the emotional eating patterns, subconscious reward associations, and self-image beliefs that drive unhelpful relationships with food. Rather than adding external rules, it shifts the internal patterns that make lasting change difficult through willpower alone.

Can hypnotherapy be used alongside other treatments?

Yes. Hypnotherapy complements counselling, medical treatment, psychological therapy, and other support modalities very effectively. If you are currently under medical or psychological care, please discuss your intention to begin hypnotherapy with your treating professional.

What Clients Say

Google Verified Reviews
★★★★★

I was a little apprehensive about the benefits of hypnotherapy and NLP however thought I would give anything a try. After a terrible year having faced the stress of moving interstate, a marriage breakdown with three small children and my brother passing away, I felt constant depression, anxiety and poor body image. After my first session I stopped the internal dialogue in my head and the repetitive negativity I was replaying daily. I put on a pair of sneakers and started running and have since lost 5kg and counting. I have had a full night’s sleep for the first time in 6 years. I feel positive that my life is on the right path and that I am now in control.
