Hypnotherapy is a focused, deeply relaxed state of attention used to work with the patterns sitting underneath a problem — the habits, reactions and beliefs that willpower alone rarely shifts. At Canberra Hypnotherapy Clinic we have been using it with Canberrans since 2012.
Most people have already been in a hypnotic state many times without calling it that: absorbed in a film, lost in music, or driving a familiar road and arriving without remembering the trip. It is a state of focused attention, and it is something you do rather than something done to you.
In that state the busy, analytical part of the mind quietens and the subconscious — where habits, emotional reactions and automatic behaviours live — becomes easier to reach. That is what makes hypnotherapy useful. Instead of arguing with yourself about a habit, you work with the part of your mind that keeps it running.
You stay aware throughout. You can speak, you can move, and you can stop at any point. Nobody can be made to do anything that conflicts with their values, whatever stage hypnosis shows have led people to believe.
Hypnosis on its own is only part of the picture. Our practitioners are Clinical Hypnotherapists, Strategic Psychotherapists and NLP Master Practitioners, and most sessions draw on all three.
We work with you to identify what you actually want to be different, and the practical strategies to get there. The focus is on how you think about a problem rather than only what you think about it — which is often where the problem is being held in place.
NLP looks at the connection between your language, your thoughts and your behaviour. Changing the way something is framed internally can change the response that automatically follows it.
A gentle, conversational style of hypnosis using indirect suggestion, metaphor and storytelling to guide you into deep relaxation — rather than the authoritarian, finger-snapping version people expect.

Hypnotherapy is versatile because it works at the level where habits, emotions and automatic reactions are formed. These are the areas we are asked about most often.
Breaking the cycle of worry, physical tension and avoidance, and building a calmer automatic response to the things that currently set it off.

Gently and at your own pace. It feels like deep relaxation rather than sleep — closer to being absorbed in something interesting.
Using suggestion, imagery and the techniques above, we work with the associations and responses that keep the problem in place, and rehearse new ones.
Each session includes a recorded hypnotherapy audio to use between appointments. Repetition is part of how a new pattern becomes the normal one.
No. Hypnosis is a state of focused attention, not sleep. Most people are surprised by how aware they feel — many report hearing everything that was said and simply feeling deeply relaxed.
No. You keep your judgement and your values throughout, and you can stop at any point. Suggestions that conflict with what matters to you are simply rejected — which is why stage-show hypnosis uses willing volunteers who want to take part.
Nearly everyone can reach a useful level of hypnosis, though people vary in how quickly and how deeply. Being willing matters far more than being “suggestible”. Your therapist adjusts the approach to suit you rather than the other way around.
It depends on what you are working on and how you respond. Many clients notice a meaningful shift within the first few sessions, and most see results within three to five. Every session is tailored to the person, and we will give you an honest estimate once we understand your situation.
No, and we would not want it to be. This is a non-clinical service: we do not diagnose or treat mental illness, and we are glad to work alongside your GP, psychologist or psychiatrist rather than in place of them.
Yes. Our practitioners are Clinical Hypnotherapists, Strategic Psychotherapists and NLP Master Practitioners, and the clinic is accredited with the industry governing bodies whose badges appear at the foot of this page. We can also provide health fund provider numbers.
Yes. Our clinic is in Deakin, Canberra, and we also run sessions by secure video for clients across the ACT, New South Wales and the rest of Australia. Online sessions are just as effective, and many people relax more easily at home.
